Breaking: You Forgot To Pack Something On A Surf Trip
The first lesson learned during our psychedelic Wim Hof session at EAST in Mexico.
What was it you forgot to jam into that coffin bag? A towel? Some wax? A leash? Or maybe you brought the leash but overlooked the string needed to connect it to that brand new step-up.
The sad truth is that you almost never get it 100% right, no matter how many surf trips you’ve been on.
Take Mason and Coco Ho, for example. As a CT veteran, Coco has racked up more sky miles in a year than most of us will in a lifetime. Mason Ho, being a high-profile freesurf wizard, isn’t exactly known to stay in one place either.
Between those two traveled surf siblings and half of our constantly relocating staff, you’d expect at least one person to show up to Day 1 of the Electric Acid Surfboard Test trip with a wetsuit, even if on accident. Alas, no, because anyone who packs neoprene with a destination of Southern Mexico would be ridiculed.
Can you imagine packing a wetsuit for a trip that close to the equator? That would be absurd. Unless, of course, your guide David Ramirez sent this exact text the day before your flight:
“Bring wetsuit jackets if possible. Jellyfish around. North winds can bring upwelling. Water could be colder than normal. First time I’ve ever heard this.”
So, the takeaway isn’t to always bring a wetsuit on a surf trip. Without a warning message, a rubberless journey down south is standard. The lesson we cultivated is that no matter how much you travel or how many times you’ve visited the destination, always listen to your guide.
