Grab your list of the world’s current best freesurfers.

Sit down. Find a pen. Write Ian Crane’s name up top, then underline it. His new film, Crane Brain, inarguably earns him a spot there.

Crane’s been on a tear in the last few years. He won Stab High in 2020 and made the final in 2021. He also taught himself how to edit and started chopping up films like this

However, Crane Brain is his biggest and best project yet.

Last year, Ian’s main sponsor, O’Neill, gave him a content budget and allowed him to run wild like the Golden Retriever that he so deeply relates to. So, he went to Indo with Dusty Payne. And Ireland with Cory Lopez. And France with Caity Simmers. His objective was simple — get the best waves possible, and have the most fun in and out of the water. That’s surfing at its most core, and Crane does it at the highest level.

Hits include beautiful-but-scary Indonesian tubes, irredeemably-scary Irish tubes, grab rail carves, the gratuitous use of the stalefish grab, and Caity Simmers in general.

Look out for an interview with Crane publishing tomorrow.
