Welcome to Episode 4 of the Surf100 Challenge Series Presented by Pacifico, the fourth of eight rounds in our $100,000 battle royale.

Last week, we lost our third surfer — Ian Crane — to Surf100’s only team challenge. It was his teammate, Cam Richards, who ended up dealing the final blow. Ian wasn’t happy about it. At all.

With Mateus, Noah Beschen, and Ian Crane gone, only five surfers remain in contention: Jacob Willcox, Rasta Robb, Eithan Osborne, Cam Richards, and Sebastian Williams.

Jacob, Eithan, Cam, Seb, and Rasta. Displaying varying states of comfortability.

Of these four, only two surfers will survive into Episode Eight’s classic Surf100 finale*, where they’ll face off against two mystery invitees for a chance at $100,000.

Now, let’s reveal the fourth challenge: Whether by ten 10s or one hundred 1s — get your score down to zero.

*Join us for a live screening of the Surf100 finale — Sept 10th at JS Garage in Oceanside, CA. The Pacificos are on us.

Jacob’s first time at Scripps and its crowd.

Episode Four: Zero Sum Game

  • Surfers start with 100 points.
  • Every wave they ride is scored out of 10 (2,5,8, etc.)
  • Each wave score gets subtracted from the starting 100 point total.
  • The last surfer to deplete all of their points down to zero will be eliminated.

A few behind-the-scenes scribbles on this episode:
– 177 waves ridden total, 2 hours and 20 minutes of total surfing, average wave score of 2.8.
– Because we didn’t want a two-hour-long episode, we couldn’t include every single wave from start to finish — hence some montages.
– This was by far the surfers’ least favorite challenge: a 2.5-hour-long heat in the most crowded waves we got during the whole project. Not to mention the twist at the end that left the surfers in suspense.
– There was so much damn surfing in the heat that our judges — Yadin and Josiah — were short-circuiting and the series’ head producer, Garrett James, had to take over doing the feverish subtracting so that no waves was missed.
– Yes—the surfers were pretty much hated by everyone in the lineup, who had no idea what was going on.

$100,000 on the line… you’d burn him too.

Comparing surfing to skating? A deadbeat cliche. Though, the temptation for a BS Disaster comparison rages.
