Skeleton Bay, Yesterday
Namibia brings drinks to the party.
It’s June, and swell charts around the world are glowing. The Southern tip of Baja, Indonesia, the South Pacific, Mainland Mex, West Oz, Europe and now Africa have been or will be lighting up. The internet and social media are brewing FOMO for surfers who have had relatively fun (or no) waves. California, meanwhile, is wiping the June gloom from their eyes during their morning thumb scrolls.
Over the past few days, a storm has whipped through Africa. Yesterday, it settled, the conditions cleaned and Namibia perked up. “This is the first shot I’ve edited from today,” a tired Tom Pearsall told Stab last night. “I’m gonna crash now. Dusted from a long day. Tomorrow looks twice as big.”
There’s been discussion about the sandbank at Skeleton Bay shifting. “If you want to see this wave in all its glory, you better get there soon,” Skeleton Bay veteran photog, Allan van Gysen told Stab earlier this year. “It definitely looks like it’s not as good as it used to be.” Right now it appears everything’s in its right place. But, as the girls on Instagram have taught us, photos are deceiving.
