Pulse Check: The Yeppoon Plunge Pool
A routine health checkup brought to you by Dylan Graves.
Can confirm, is alive.
Most pools work pretty hard to conceal their wave generation tech, at Yeppoon it’s the unmissable moving centerpiece that uses a plunger to create concentric swell lines over a specially shaped concrete bottom. One that goat-boater, Old Pete, who you will hear from in this clip, poured himself.
Yeppoon is still a test site, but in full commercial swing, Surf Lakes should be able to create 2,000 rideable waves per hour across four peaks. To put that into perspective, Waco does 150 waves per hour and URBNSURF about 1000. A large part of that is the relative simplicity of the design, there’s not that many moving parts.
Plus, one plunge, four peaks.
Slated to open in early 2023, Yeppoon will sit within a broader development known as Bombora Surf Resort. The development will include eco-camping, glamping, cabins, a food, bev and entertainment precinct and more. Roughly a nine hour drive (750kms) from the Gold Coast, Surf Lakes CEO, Aaron Trevis expects between 100,000 and 300,000 visitors annually to the tourist park once it is up and running, which would make it one of the biggest tourism attractions in central Queensland.
There’s fuck all reason to go to Yeppoon otherwise, so it’ll be interesting if this can move the needle.
Also, this was a really well-produced, informative piece by the Vans Pickup co-host.
Nice one Dyl.
