Moana Jones Wong Is Setting A Precedent
The queen of Pipeline helps the future of the North Shore.
Moana Jones Wong has solidified herself as a force at Pipeline. You didn’t need to watch the Thursday/Friday spectacle that was the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout to know that, but it didn’t hurt her case.
Vans recently showcased Moana in the latest episode of Door to Door, a weekly series during the 2022 Digital Triple Crown of Surfing window that gives some insight into some of the most talented Hawaii surfers. Episode 1 featured The Pick-Up host Pua DeSoto, and episode 2 followed underground charger and family man Shayden Pacarro.
While Moana probably can’t claim underground status given her feats at the world’s most famous wave, she does plenty outside of the spotlight as well. She’s already thinking about the next generation and how her influence can springboard the next up-and-coming wahine.
In this episode, show host and “YouTube extraordinaire” Nathan Florence tags along with Moana to her surf school, where she teaches local boys and girls how to get comfortable in heavier waves. Yes, somehow there are protected winter spots on the North Shore capable of hosting a surf school.
So far this VTCS window, Moana has one solid Pipeline entry already under her belt and a Vans Crown Clip to show for it (here are her entries). But, as she described in the video above, she’s hungry for more.
