Americans and Australians, you may want to sit down for this one. Stab has just done the math and it appears that for the first time in history, Brazil holds the most Championship Tour slots of any surfing nation. Boom!

The nationality breakdown of the 2018 CT is this:

Brazil: 11 surfers
USA: 10 surfers
Australia: 8 surfers
France: 2 surfers
South Africa: 1 surfer
Portugal: 1 surfer
French Polynesia: 1 surfer

And can you believe it? Can you even stand to reason that surfing’s long-time underdog nation is finally at the top? Oh this is a historic day indeed!

Brazil, of course, won its first world title in 2014 with Gabriel Medina, which was followed by another in 2015 with Adriano de Souza, but these victories did little to quell the barrage of disrespect from “Western” surfing nations. Maybe now that Brazil holds the biggest chunk of the Championship Tour, American and Australian surfers will be forced to lend Brazil the respect it deserves.

Which would be a smart move, because Deus knows they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
