Did You Know Sal Masakela Moonlights As An R&B Crooner?!
Surfing’s answer to David Attenborough has a new single, Too $hort is on it, and you can live stream a performance of it…
Sal Masakela’s smooth, syrupy Voice of God might be one of the most recognizable in surfing, our South African answer to David Attenborough. But did you know Mr. Masakela comes from South African musical royalty, the son of the honorable Hugh Masakela, anti-apartheid trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist and singer? And did you know that the apple certainly does not fall far from the tree?
Friday, y’all can get a taste of what Sal’s been up to when he isn’t narrating and commentating every major extreme sporting event: recording R&B grooves with his longtime friend, Sunny Levine, under the name ALEKESAM
According the duo, “Sal and Sunny’s musical history goes well beyond their current configuration. Their fathers (Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine) were long time musical partners and raised Sal and Sunny as brothers.
Defying genre, ALEKESAM has created their own sound which they call SURF R&B. Their 2015 song ALL IS FORGIVEN went viral after it was featured in season four of Showtime series House Of Lies. In addition to his musical endeavors, Sal is well known as a TV presenter and for his contributions in the Action Sports and Surf worlds. Sunny is also a recording artist under his own name and recently produced the new Shabazz Places album: Quazarz vs The Jealous Machines.
ALEKESAM will be releasing their new single OH SHANTE feat. TOO $HORT on Friday October 27th. And to commemorate their new partnership with RVCA, they will be live streaming a performance with TOO $HORT on Thursday October 26th at 8pm Pacific Time/11pm East Coast time.
ALEKESAM will be releasing a new record along a RVCA capsule collection next year, but until then head to their Facebook and Instagram pages for more info on the livestream performance.
