Watch: Sierra Kerr and Al Cleland Junior Just Won $1,000 for Lounging in Tubes
Thanks, Sun Bum.
Al Cleland Junior is 18 years old and has the tube awareness of a mid-20s Irons brother. Over the course of five hours at Macaronis, he dragged his way through a total of 15 tubes, getting deeper than a pebble in a sock and not falling once.
And don’t get us started on Sierra Kerr. While in Kandui, the 14-year-old free-fell into waves that would have atomized her sub-100-pound frame, had she not scooped under the lip and ridden away unscathed.
As if these tubes weren’t rewarding enough on their own, Sierra and Al were recently gifted $1,000 apiece for their efforts in Indo, courtesy of Sun Bum.
Watch their highlights first, then read about how it happened below.
Many of you are aware of Stab’s late-2020 Mentawai Islands excursion.
The purpose of this trip was to produce the third iteration of Vans Stab High presented by Monster Energy, which rolled out in a four-part series last December. As a refresher, Ian Crane won the men’s, Caity Simmers won the Ladybirds, and Nate Fletcher, at the sophisticated age of 46, took home the Monster Air award.
Our biggest problem on this trip? The waves were too good.
Sounds ridiculous, but it’s true. The waves at Lance’s, Macaronis, and most of the other spots we surfed over those 12 days were so damn perfect, the crew was having trouble getting above the lip. So naturally, they went under, around, and through it.
Big fans of UV protection, the Sun Bum crew wanted to reward the surfers who spent the most time in the shade. So they had us go back through the clips and find the guy and Ladybird who clocked the most (and most impressive) tube time from their stay.
The results were unanimous: Sierra Kerr and Al Cleland Jr. were easily the most comfortable in the tube, despite their combined age of just 32. And now they’re $1,000 richer for it. Not a bad life.
