SSW swell has been serenading the Bukit for a few days now.

But today, with a little help from the Indian Ocean and some mercifully low-ish high tides, it should crescendo into a full-blown, 6–8-foot, fire-twirling, conch-blowing, peptide-enhanced, ayahuasca-adjacent pagan surf ritual, at the end of which the 23rd Rip Curl Padang Cup champions will be crowned.

Meanwhile, around the cliffs, a solemn drum circle of Russian developers will stare out to sea, quietly wondering why grown men are risking spinal compression for fun. Then they’ll notice the beautiful women watching from the beach and, voilà, it will all make perfect sense.

Which is a very long way of saying: the Rip Curl Padang Cup is ON.

Once again, a highly variegated collection of tube artists, including but not limited to Bruce Irons, Taj Burrow, Mason Ho, Tosh Tudor, James Kusitino, Vaihitimahana Inso and Sky Brown, plus a pile of locals who know the joint considerably better than everyone just mentioned, will be fed into Bali’s favourite limestone blender and, with a little more divine intervention, spat out somewhere near Dreamland.

Format

The women go first with four non-elimination round-robin heats.

Then the men get eight.

Every surfer competes in two 30-minute, four-person heats. Their two best scores across both heats count toward the leaderboard.

The top four men and top four women advance to their respective four-person finals.

Then the spreadsheets are thrown into the sea and it becomes very simple: winner takes everything.
