Watch: A Forcibly Different Tube-Riding Technique
Learn to lean on the back foot with Mason Ho in Mexico.
We recently spent two weeks in Mexico with Coco and Mason Ho filming for an upcoming Electric Acid Surfboard Test.
Toward the end of our trip, a confluence of sand dispersion and swell led to extraordinary conditions at a certain right-hand point. The backwashy takeoff led to a big, open wall, which eventually gave way to multiple tube sections down the line. Mason was enthralled.
“This might be the most fun day of surfing I’ve had in years,” he declared after his first eight-hour session.
Mason feasted on the point for the entirety of that swell, pushing all manner of surfboards through its flat-bottomed tubes. Some waves sucked up so much that he had to adopt a revised tube-riding technique—one with his butt shifted well behind his feet, so that he could put as much weight as possible over the tail to keep his nose aloft. The frame grab at the top of this screen serves as an example.
After the EAST trip was over, Mason decided to stay in Mexico for the next batch of swell. With a fresh quiver of Mayhems delivered to his cabana, Mason made daily pilgrimages to his new favorite wave. Let these 15 minutes serve as proof.
