There’s Plenty West Oz Surfers Missing All The Right Screws
The desert’s for those who prefer their tubes dry and the landscape dusted.
For about 35,000 years the Baiyungu people have called a dusty, surf-rich stretch of Western Australia home. Most recently, Gracetown photographer and filmmaker Kim Feast went deep into the zone, documenting its sacred seascapes and illustrating why rambling through W.A. is still a surfer’s surf trip.
Beat feet out of Margaret River and rugged desert survivalism is a requirement. Crowds give way to empty, washboard roads. Snakes on land and sharks in the water keep the nervous system flexing. Everything is raw, exposed and alive. The barrels are heavy and unforgiving. A full day in the surf and a mellow evening smashing tins by the campfire with mates, it’s good, simple living…a chance to get back to the reason for it all.
Red Bull Surfing’s new “Taking Off” video drop encompasses it all. Kegging slabs, underground chargers, and wide open spaces. It’s good living and a solid reminder to put down the phone, throw the rig in four-wheel drive and go get lost.
