Town & Country Surfboards just turned 50. Tom Carroll is 60. Two heritage giants whose contributions to surf culture warrant their own chapters in the annals of surf history.

Craig Sugihara’s T&C surfboards have been ridden by 50% of Hawaiian Male World Champions and a list of generation-defining talent from Dane Kealoha, Billy Kemper, Christian Fletcher, Sunny Garcia, the Irons brothers and more.

Tom Carroll is a two-time World Champion (83’, 84’), 2-40 foot style savant, and one of the most widely-respected and liked figures in surfing.

Matt Warshaw from the Encyclopedia of Surfing described TC as follows: “Carroll’s disposition amplified his popularity. He was confident but not arrogant, emotional but not volatile, dignified but still matey. He projected a sense of gratitude—not just for a career that afforded him prestige and a handsome living, but for the good luck of having been born a surfer.”

In the second episode of ‘What’s Going On?’ (you can watch ep 1 here), TC & the T&C Pin Byrner collide in everyday conditions on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. They click instantly and TC makes it look at home despite being 5,071.05 mi (8,161.07 km) from the original Pearl Harbor factory that Craig Suighara started shaping out of in 1972.

“Town and Country was the brand when I was a kid. It was huge, it had the best guys like Mark Liddell, Dane Kealoha, these amazing surfers, and when I first went over there I was just besotted with the Yin & Yang thing”, says Tom. His analysis of the Pin Byrner? “You can turn off the tail, but then you can step up forward and get that glide going… Because of the way it’s setup, it felt like I was channeling Dane Kealoha through me. I love the way that guy surfed.”

Side Note: T&C are upping their Australian expansion, and will be giving away a whole inventory of items to one lucky entrant in partnership with Vans, URBNSURF, and Surfstitch.

  • A brand new limited edition T&C surfboard
  • A heap of Vans X T&C merchandise
  • A session at URBNSURF Melbourne
  • 5-star accommodation
  • And return flights for 2 people anywhere in Australia
