The word ‘challenge’ doesn’t quite cover what it is to surf Mavericks. Out there in the cold juice of Half Moon Bay, taking on crushing black avalanches that wanna put you down deep. Jamie Sterling gets his thrills from places like that. Jamie recently competed in the Mavericks Invitational, held in a swell that was real questionable as far as contestability goes. Peaking, a new series from Red Bull, lets you ride shotgun with big wave surfers during the 72-hour window surrounding a big wave event or big wave session. The first one features Mr Sterling at Mavs. Even though the event was kinda anti-climactic (but who could’ve seen that coming? Except contest organisers, o’ course), it’s an honest look at how a man of grit preps for an event of this kind.
