Parker Coffin Tells Ex: ‘Thank You For Everything’
Freesurfing’s best communicator leaves a classy farewell to Roark.
Jordy Smith’s long-time agent and former Stab employee Damien ‘Dooma’ Fahrenfort drills all the talent he works with on the importance of communication.
He boiled it down for us in HSGP. “My advice for the next generation? If you’re a young pro surfer, it’s probably communication. It seems like everyone’s pretty bad at communicating, despite everyone’s on their phone all day. No one talks to their sponsors, no one ever goes and asks, “Hey, what can I do for you guys?” It’s crazy. I think as young surfers, and I was one of them too, you feel super entitled, like the brand owes you something, and you’re always kind of hearing about what the other guy on your team’s getting and you want more and you expect more. But in reality, as soon as you’ve run a business or been in business, you understand how much goes into it, so just having a bit more perspective and actually just communicating.”
Dooma’s solution was the ‘Two Minutes A Day’ – he used Banzai warlord Reef McIntosh as the champion of this practice – who religiously called Quiksilver’s staffers everyday. “He just made everyone feel like they were a part of his life and so everyone was rooting for him and everybody wanted him to win,” said Dooma. “He did that, and so when the question arose of ‘who we cutting?’ The response was always ‘Well we can’t cut Reef, he’s family’. He’s still sponsored by Quiksilver today and he did it probably better than anyone I’ve ever seen,” explained Doom.

Parker Coffin, who recently swapped out his Roark sticker for Bodyglove is another one of those characters with a strongly-developed EQ, that witting or unwittingly – will add mileage to his Freesurf career. Case in point this classy farewell to Roark, the CI Pro he designed with Britt Merrick, and the countless pleases and thank yous he sends to Stab for work we partner on, every time.
I know us ‘industry folk’ might seem like a crusty bunch of untalented wannabes, but that crust guards a soft, tender interior – and we’re all just desperate for affirmation from young, hot surfers that we can tell our friends about.
Here’s the Snapt 4, Stab High, Stab Highway, SEOTY, Drive Thru, Backdoor Shootout stars goodbye to his major sponsor of five years.
