Chippa Wilson, Ozzie Wright, Dion Agius And More Go One Rudder At Racetrack
The ever-charming Uluwatu Single Fin Classic.
You’d be forgiven if you weren’t aware that the 2nd annual Uluwatu Single Fin Classic went down a little over a week ago. I had no idea it was a thing until Morgan sent me this video and asked me to staple some words to it.
It looks like a very fun time. Whole lotta familiar faces in there. Smiles all around. Spectators hooting and hollering and genuinely enjoying themselves.
It barely even feels like a surf contest. Because surf comps are serious business. There’s no room for fun when your career is on the line. From menehune division on up they’re about being driven and wearing frowns and jockeying for position and damp wetsuits and stretching and working with your coach and winning at all costs!
I hope they run a 3rd annual and beyond of this event. Because I like watching very good surfers rip on old beat-up single fins. And because I love when normal surfers try to follow suit.
Old single fins are not easy to ride. They’re slow. They turn like shit. There’s a reason they got ditched the moment surfboard technology found another way forward. But that won’t stop consumers from placing an order after a clip of their favorite pro generates some stoke. And I’ve always had enjoyed a hearty chuckle when I see an average joe attempting to link turns together on one of the fuckers. Bog, bog, bog.
It ain’t easy making that shit look good.
Let’s bring the fad back! Single fins for everyone! And, while we’re at it, let’s run more surf contests that focus on fun. Contests that feature empty bottles and shouts of approval instead of security guards and event-wide cigarette bans.
Ozzie Wright won the bastard, which grabbed him airfare to the 2020 Burleigh Single Fin Festival. Organizers also handed tickets to Agus “Blacky” Setiawan and Dex Scoot in recognition of their throw-back shred-age.
