Night Surfing: Mundaka With A Headlight
That’s one way to avoid a crowd.
Mundaka’s great, but the crowd sucks. Especially when the swell is as cooking as this. If you’re a big name or a well known local, you’ve got half a chance at lucking into one. But if you’re an average punter, aside from take-off blunders and end section scurries, you won’t be chipping into much of worth.
The Lost In Swell blokes, however, have come up with an alternative.
Rather than fighting a ravenous pack at the swell’s peak, just jump out there smack bang in the middle of the night. And no they don’t need to rely on a well-timed full moon either, just clip a couple floodlights to your gath and get out amongst it.
The headlamps they’re using are some of the most powerful in the world – the equivalent of two car headlights – and while they provide some illumination, as the POV footage shows, it’s not close to being comparable to daylight.
They start off testing them at a few run of the mill spots then dart to Mundaka – the first time they’d ever surfed it mind you. The boys endure a proper beating but eventually luck into a few claim-worthy waves considering the conditions.
Slide up and watch the best attempt at crowd evasion we’ve witnessed yet.
