Based on his Tahitian exploits, Kauai's Jacob Turner could probably have his own section in the film — but he might have to settle for the ender clip of the grom section. Photo: Tim McKenna

New Blood Rising: Snapt’s Last Chapter Will Now Feature A Grom Section

Logan Dulien adds a farewell gift to Snapt5.

Best junior of 2024?

Snapt5 has been on our radar ever since Clay Marzo was spotted getting faded at Desert Point last year — middle fingers raised, four brutal minutes of tube riding that, somehow, didn’t make the final cut.

Pure joy. Pure exhilaration. But fleeting. The day Snapt5 was announced, Logan Dulien — the brains and guts behind the series — dropped the news that this would be the series’ last dance.

The final cut is expected in 2025, but Logan’s keeping the suspense high, dropping tantalising b-side footage in bursts. See: goat ranch, faraway lands, more goat ranch.

But there’s more to this farewell. Logan’s making sure it’s not just an exit, but a torch passed to the next generation.

“I figured I could give three minutes to another top pro, or I could use that time to spotlight some of the world’s best groms, all together in one section,” Logan explains.

To find them, he’s going straight to the circus tent: social media.

“There’s so much talent I’ve never seen, so I decided to open the grom section via social media,” Logan says. “We’ve already had 300 submissions from all over the world. It’s been eye-opening — I would’ve thought these kids would care more about a TikTok post than being in my movie. It’s humbling, really, that they care about Snapt5. Let’s be honest — Snapt is like a 25-year-old car, still running, but barely.”

Throughout this piece, we’ll share some of our favourite entries from cyber groms across the globe. To be clear, these are the ones that caught our eye, not necessarily Logan’s.

It’s obvious why the pull of Snapt still matters to the kids. The last four have featured icons such as Andy and Bruce Irons, Mick Fanning, Taj Barrow, Joel Parkinson, Mikala Jones, and more recently, Jack Robbo, Mason Ho, Bobby Martinez. And the new film is rumored to include Noa Deane and Harry Bryant, among other modern-day superstars.

Beyond the names, the series has a rare, hard-edged respect. Parker Coffin owes it his career.

“I was basically accepting the end of my surfing career when Logan offered me a part in Snapt3,” reflects Parker. “I’d lost all my sponsors, but that part in the movie turned things around. After the movie, I got a sponsor, and suddenly, the momentum was back.”

Logan’s in deep with this one. Last year, he told us that Snapt5 was “one last go at it, for the love of surfing, for surf fans, for my love of surf films.”

Now, he’s got a full weekend ahead of him. “I’ve followed and commented on every grom’s post so they know I’ve seen their entry. Now, I’ve got to narrow down over 300 entries to 14. I’ll cut it off this Friday [November 8th], and spend the weekend making the final call, announcing Monday.”

And maybe, just maybe, Logan hints at a distant return: “Who knows, maybe way down the line, I’ll come back for Snapt6. Some of these same groms might be the best surfers on the planet by then.”

Snapt6, coming way, way, way down the track. You heard it here first.
