What Would You Pray To A New God For Waves Like This?
Kai and Teo Gale Grani pay tribute, reap spiritual rewards.
Contrary to popular opinion, Stab does not publish every Indo hype reel that hits the inbox.
We do our best not to saturate the market with footage of surfing’s most adored/overwhelmed archipelago. But when brothers Kai and Teo Gale Grani shared the clip you see above, we had to give it the nod.
The teenagers, born and raised in Panama to Italian and Argentinian parents, captured their best moments from a two-month Indo assault, scoring rights and lefts from Desert Point to Lakey Peak.
The title of the clip, The Singing Bowl (edited by Kai), is a reference to a literal metal bowl the brothers saw the locals using. Often referred to as Tibetan or Himalayan bowls, the objects have been linked with ancient meditation and religious ceremonies for thousands of years. When struck, they produce a strong, rich tone that is associated with healing and overall good vibes. Though there’s not a clear consensus on where the practice originated, they’ve become adopted in rituals in Tibet, Nepal, India, and nearly all white suburban yoga studios.
It turns out these bowls aren’t just meant to make you feel more zen — Kai said one of the locals was using it specifically to attract waves.
“I’m not sure if he was being serious or not, but after he played it there were non-stop waves for the next couple of days,” Kai recalled with a laugh.
It’s too early to tell if Kai and Teo will become full-blown sound healing practitioners, but if it summons waves like the ones they found, we’d be believers too.
