Episode 07 of the Surf100 Challenge Series Presented by Pacifico is here, the last before our $100,000 surf-off.

Quick glance in the rearview mirror: Kyuss King was the season’s first eliminee at Blacks Beach in Episode 01, Benji Brand said his goodbyes at Oceanside in Episode 02, Ryan Huckabee bowed out at Steamer Lane in Episode 03, Jackson Bunch got eliminated in Santa Cruz in Episode 04, and his fellow Hawaiian Finn McGill in the Outer Banks in Episode 05.

Episode 06 was technically a non-elimination affair at New Smyrna, but Dakoda Walters punched his golden ticket to the September 9 finale, leaving one spot up for grabs and two surfers fighting for it.

Lets’s now bring our eyes back to the road ahead.

In an eerie Last Man on Earth scenario at an empty Waco Surf in Texas, Zeke Lau and Dimitri Poulos go head-to-head for a chance to add six figures to their bank accounts. If they can beat Dakoda, Parko and Noa, that is.

Here are the rules for their next challenge, dubbed Triple Threat

  • Each surfer gets five rights and five lefts.
  • Best right and best left scores will be counted.
  • Each surfer gets an additional 10 air attempts.
  • Best air score is added to the best right and left for the final combined total.

Head judge Yadin Nicol stressed the importance of variety and degree of difficulty in turns and tricks, as well as height and landings on airs attempted.

“I’d be standing tall in that tube,” Dimitri said at the sight of an empty, glassy righthander licking the man made pool bottom. Hard to imagine 6’2″ Zeke Lau thinking the same. Could stature play a role in this challenge?

“Get in the freaking water, Zeke!” Josiah Amico shouts, burning his last bridge between mainland US and Hawaii before our surfers get in the pool.

And, since Waco Surf is Stab High’s ancestral home, we don’t think we’re giving too much away by saying that airs might play a significant role in determining our last finalist.

Narrowly avoiding torn skin and mangled ankles, our last men standing go toe-to-toe until the very last wave before celebrating the outcome with amicable poolside Pacificos.

“It’s been a long couple of weeks, but thankful it’s over,” Zeke said.

“It’s been fun. Coming to Waco at the end was pretty cool. Being able to surf the pool is just a treat in itself,” Dimitri said in his post-heat presser.

Series director Will Stiles concurred: “Everyone was pretty torched [after the 14-day trip], but the boys were fired up to be in Texas. We had Texas BBQ the night before, and they got to surf the wavepool at night when we arrived and got plenty of practice.”

He added: “Zeke surprised everyone with how well he was surfing that night too.”

At the end of a two-week coast-to-coast grind and seven challenges, who do you think is taking this?
