Ozzie Wright’s influence on style is one of the widest reaching in surfing. Ask gents like Dion or Creed and they’ll praise Oz with showing them the punk ‘tude they surf with. And his style continues to reach more generations, like here with Eli Steele. Eli is an 18-year-old gent from the Sunshine Coast, Aus and the conditions in this clip shot by Dylan Roberts are not too dissimilar from home. The footage was collected from two trips, one based around the SoCal area in January with Matt O’Brien shooting stills and another to Taiwan in May.
“The US was pretty a pretty mellow,” Eli says, “The only gnarly thing was waking up one night and, outside the motel we were at and there was a cop pointing his gun at some dude in the car park, lights flashing everywhere, screaming at him and what not, that was pretty wild. That area is so hard to figure out what beach is going to be good, we spent a fair bit of time driving around chasing our tail. It feel like everyone you talk to has a different opinion on where is going to be fun.”
