Shane Sykes, ever heard the name?

We had—just barely—but not enough to spit any facts about South Africa’s broad-jawed, flowing-maned lion of a young man.

So, after gorging on this tasty morsel from California lensman Hunter Martinez, we decided to ask Shane a few simple questions about his past, present, and future.

Ya know, like the first night at summer camp… just without the subsequent handjob down by the lake.

Stab: How old are you and where you from?
Shane Sykes: I’m 22 years old and from Durban, South Africa.

What are your aspirations in surfing (comp guy, movie queen, somewhere in between)?
I want to get insane waves all over the world with good friends and land sick shit and just enjoy every part of this journey. I do still want to try make the CT at some point… and put out some good video parts along the way.

Who are his three greatest surfing influences?
Dane Reynolds. Noa Deane. John John.

What’s your favorite book and why?
Art of War by Sun Tzu. It teaches you how to take on battles—in general, and in surfing. It also teaches you to become a better leader and achieve better results in anything you do.

What are you afraid of?
Snakes. Used to have the worst nightmares about them when I was young. Since then they always tweak me out!
