Admit It, You Want To See What Happens Next On This Venturian Wedge
As with supple breasts on the topless shores of France, surfers can’t avert their gaze from a high-spirited wedge.
Seriously, what is it with surfers and wedges?
It’s almost Freudian the way we’re drawn to the apexing peaks, proven by the fact that you’re reading these very words under a video whose featured image is a shimmering A-frame.
And when we see a wedge in the wild, or better yet charging right toward us in the lineup, there is no better feeling. The anticipation, the rise, the speed – oh it is a thing of wonder!
But ironically, the wave’s very shape makes it difficult to achieve anything noteworthy, performance-wise.
As does Eithan Osbourne in the video above, you’ll typically outrun the barrel then be left going so fast that, unless your name is Dane R. or G., a turn would transform your legs to jello and send you skipping across the face.
So we resort to an air, typically one much worse than Eithan’s but with the same devastating result.
Then we paddle back out and pray for another chance.
Wedges.
