A Seven-Minute Reminder That South Africa Has World Class Waves You Don’t Know About
…and Jordy Smith is the perfect man for the job.
It has been said that you could film an entire video part in South Africa in two weeks.
Jordy Smith spent a lot longer than that working on his film ‘Plus 27’ — and it shows. Released last year, the 23-minute feature film left us asking ChatGPT how much a South African tourist visa costs ($36 USD).
“This video is insane, one of the best films I’ve seen in a while and that last section was otherworldly,” wrote Kolohe’s Mullet, one of our perennial commenters. “Jordy rips so much harder than majority of the current tour it’s a wonder he hasn’t won a world title yet. This is a definite contender for film/edit of the year, thanks Red Bull and O’neill for blessing our eyes.”
And yet, despite its undeniable caliber of waves, surfing, and production, it feels as though Plus 27 slipped under the cultural radar a bit.
Fortunately, O’Neill, Red Bull and Jordy decided to release it on YouTube this week, along with a condensed 7-minute showreel of the best waves (featured above.) Good luck spending the next four hours on Google Maps.
