No electoral college here.
The 2024 Comment of the Year will be settled by the popular vote. Click the links above or below (or here) to make your pick for the most clever, poignant, or incisive quip below the equator in 2024.
Stab Premium member votes will count for 50% of the final decision, with the other 50% of the electoral onus resting on the shoulders of the Stab employees. We’re voting on an internal Slack thread, no spoilers here.
Oh, and what does the winner win? Drum roll… A free surfboard from Kolohe Andino’s Stab In The Dark, a Stab T-Shirt, and a gift card to Barnes & Noble (or equivalent bookstore in your area)!
To reignite your memory, here are the 12 candidates you’ll be voting on along with the context in which they first appeared:
January
From Kolohe Andino’s Stab In The Dark With Kolohe Andino, Episode 1. Channel Islands, despite having the most Stab In The Dark wins historically, did not win this year, btw.
February
From Sierra Kerr’s Stab Edit of the Entry, Pre-Kerrsor, also in reference to Caity Simmers’ Bell Jar edit.
March
From the season finale of Stab In The Dark With Kolohe Andino.
April
From Kelly Slater’s quasi-retirement announcement.
May
From Italo Ferreira’s win over Gabriel Medina in the 2024 Shiseido Tahiti Pro.
June
From prolific Stab commenter Undergunned’s open letter to the new WSL CEO, Ryan Crosby.
July
Darrell’s the winner here. This is from the formal announcement of Dave Rastovich being our 2024 Electric Acid Surfboard Test pilot.
August
From the Olympics debacle where the IOC asked Jack Robinson to remove the Andy Irons tribute “Rising Sun” artwork on his boards (due to the problematic history of the symbolism behind the “Rising Sun” motif), while saying nothing about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
September
This was the winning comment from the WSL Finals live commenting bonanza. Out of 533 comments, this one took the win. This quip is a reference to the hundred-deep pack of surfers who mobbed the Lowers peak during Caity’s winner interview on the ski, harking back to an article by our own Coral McDuffee entitled, “Unsolicited Advice From Men”.
October
From our deep dive on the Challenger Series, entitled “Why Is Brazil So Dominant On The CS?”.
November
From Erwin Bliss’s (who’s Caribbean-European and thus, inclined toward tobacco use) Stab Edit of the Year entry, ‘Dipsychia’.
December
From our survey on our Stab Premium members’ favorite surfboards of 2024, entitled “The 20 Best Surfboard Models On The Market, According To You — Part 1”.
