Tune Into Finals Day At Da Hui’s Annual Tube Fest, Right Here
Pipeline continues to deliver Hawaiian underpasses at the Backdoor Shootout.
The scoring, format and leaderboard at the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout is, and always has been, difficult to follow.
Essentially, each team gets a group session. The heats are 25 minutes today (which is faster than in the past, as the heat times tend to fluctuate), and by the end of the day, they will be crowning a winner (the gentleman with the highest score) and a team winner (team with the highest score). The waves are scored out of 12 points, and throughout this event we’ve seen a few crazy ones. Most notably, Tyler Newton’s second reef stunner and Keito Matsouka’s perfect ride. Both can be viewed below.
One thing that’s easy to follow in the Shootout is the surfing. Da Hui’s annual tube fest continues to be the most exciting event held at Pipeline (if we’re going on waves alone). Pipeline always seems to turn on for the competition, it’s held late enough in the season that the sand has settled properly. The swell slams the reef producing all the critical power we’ve come to love and fear from the notorious tube. Surfline is streaming it live and we’ve taken the liberty of embedding it above.
Here’s Bruce Irons, moments before posting this:
The current leaderboard can be found here. We dare you to try and make sense of it.
