The Gabriel Medina Biopic Is Coming
“You don’t get as good as a World Champion unless you’re an obsessive.” – Kelly Slater
“I met surfing at 7 years old,” reads Gabriel Medina’s latest Instagram post.
“As soon as I got on the board, the dream came: to be world champion,” he continues. “Since then, I’ve spent most of my life in the water chasing the biggest goal of my life. But it was never easy. Everyone knows Gabriel Medina today, but few know the things I went through to get here. I managed to make my dream come true, and now I’m very happy to be able to share my story and life path with you.”
That’s right folks, the Gabriel Medina biopic is coming. Its trailer is below for your enticement.
To “Western”, non-Portuguese-speaking surf fans, Medina and his Brazilian cohorts are something of a mystery. We see them in events, in constantly-improving post-heat interviews, and in curated Instagram installments, but rarely do we feel connected to “The Storm” and its many occupants (with the exception Italo Ferreira, who is just one muscly, over-caffeinated jumping bean of good vibes).
This is especially true of Gabriel Medina—Brazil’s first surfing world champion and some would argue the most dominant competitive surfer in the modern era.
We know he’s a great surfer. We know he has an extremely pensive but caring step-father. We know he shaves his pits.
But who is the real Gabriel Medina?
Having met him once at a party in Hawaii, I can confirm that Gabby has terrifyingly dark eyes and a handshake like he’s handling a dove, as if to say, “I could crush you if I wanted, but I have nothing to prove here, for I am Gabriel Medina.”
The most effortlessly confident man I’ve encountered.
And from most accounts, Gab’s a stellar dude on terra firma. But we also know he’s a total dick in heats, or as some would say, a “master tactician”. Which is the “real” him?
Whomever Gabby is, we hope it will be revealed in his new documentary film, Gabriel Medina, airing at the end of this month. We also hope there will be English subtitles for us pathetic monolinguists.
