Stab Podcast: “I Couldn’t Believe How Powerful The Horse Was”
An interview with cowboy Matt Wilko and a chat on Tasmania with Dion Agius.
Did you see that header image? No cute intro for you today; let’s get down to business.
Matt Wilko, who was once the #1 ranked surfer on the CT, has made an eventful career change. Alongside his “big fucking horse,’ Wilko has released his debut album as a country singer, and it’s glorious.
Uncle Willy featured on Stab’s podcast, The Drop, this week and gave us a little background on how the planets aligned for this sudden shift in the profession. After years of hijinx and shenanigans on the set of the WCT, Wilko’s commitment to the cowboy hat and bolo tie is 100% serious. Uncle Willy fills us in on how he plans to balance his lingering surf career with his road to Nashville.
On the other side of the serious surf spectrum, we find Dion Agius. Dion hops on the phone to talk about his new film ‘Dark Hollow’ and the peculiar existence of surf movies. A product is only as good as its presentation, and Dion has always taken a unique approach to his film releases.
Dion also talks about his home in Tasmania— how his friends growing up became such gnarly watermen, the hesitation with surfing Shipstern Bluff and dodging Tiger Snakes outside his front door.
