Nic Lamb is the Titan of Mavericks
The Pe’ahi challenge has sufficiently desensitised viewers from the big wave shock factor. The Pe’ahi challenge has sufficiently desensitised viewers from the big wave shock factor. After watching the world’s best out there in competition format, no other big wave event since has had the same, oh my god, someone’s going to die, heart in stomach feeling. And, sadly that’s really all viewers want, not for someone to pass, but for people to defy death for our entertainment, like Evil Kenevil.
Last week Mavs was the best it’s been in years, we all saw the footage and hoped that today’s event would be held in similar conditions. If the Super Bowl didn’t block out the event, this story would surely be a bit different. But, nevertheless it was still big and very consequential. In the first round Ken “Skin Dog” Collins went down on one of larger waves of the day, burst his ear drum and later said if he didn’t pull his vest he would’ve drowned. But watching a big wave event without a barrel section is just not that exciting.
Definitely not child’s play, someone should tell the kid operating the drone. Photo: Titans of Mavericks
Guys like Greg Long, Mark Healey, Jamie Mitchell, Nic Lamb and the usual suspects were going hard all day, knifing late drops, accepting their cold water floggings and getting back out for more. Shane Dorian didn’t make it over, citing back troubles, but he probably just read the forecast and already got his fix at Jaws a few days ago. Doz is a legend, he can do whatever he pleases.
Nic Lamb took the cake in the final beating out Jamie Mitchell, Greg Long, Carlos Burle, Travis Payne and Tyler Fox. The swell slowed down a bit, but there still were some hefty drops to be taken. Nic and Greg were the first to show this morning. Nic was pumped all day long, he brought his suit, put himself in the heaviest situations, took serious beatings, stayed active and is now the Titan of Mavericks.
Side note: Chris Cote looked lovely with that trident on his sweater. And that Fall Out Boy song is fucking horrendous.
