King Of The Groms: Stab’s Picks (so far)

Judged by Dane Reynolds, Craig Anderson, Jeremy Flores and a Quiksilver panel, round one of 2015’s King Of The Groms is an Instagram-based format with three disciplines: #KingOfTheAir, #KingOfTheRail and #KingOfTheCombo. Surfers must enter all three categories, posting one-wave clips for each and accompanying the # with @quiksilver and #KingOfTheGroms. So far, there’s been some amazing entries. And, Stab did some digging to elevate some of the most impressive so far… Tane Tweaks. Full competition rundown here. Tane Bowden is 14 and really gets it done in the water. He’s Kiwi-turned-Victorian and has hair like fellow countryman Ricardo Christie, coupled with shades of Pat Gudauskas’ style. Go check out all his entries here. Vitor Mendes is the younger brother of Jesse Mendes and he’s 17 years old. His full rote to layback #kingoftheair entry is really something special. Get at it, and the rest of his clips, here. Sammy Pupo is another Brazilian pro’s younger brother, this time Miggie Pupo. Sammy is 14 and has a silky style, with a few #kingoftheair entries being highlights. Go peep all his entries over here. Harley’s frontside roter is dressed to impress. Luis Diaz is from the Canary islands and knows how to get down with a section. He’s 15, goofy, and Jony Gonzalez, who sponsors Luis through his Wawa Surf Shop, says “Man, Luis surfs so good, it’s rad… he’s incredible for his age.” IG for entries, here. Dean Vandewalle is a 13-year-old originally from Ghent, Belgium, now living in Costa Rica. How about that? And, his eyesight is terrible, so he surfs in specialty prescription eyewear. He really goes in on some big sections for his #kingofthecombo entry. Watch it, and his others, here. Harley Ross has a particularly impressive #kingoftheair entry: a big frontside hail mary out of a pretty solid section. The 16-year-old’s other entries certainly aren’t shabby either. Get at the Manly grom’s Instagram entries right over here. More to come soon. And keep an eye on the entries over at Stab’s KOTG feed, here.
