The Heritage Heat at J-Bay between Tom Curren and Mark Occhilupo produced a 10-point ride (Curren) that commanded much of the Internets in the following days. Age mercies no man (‘cept, like, Kelly Slater and maybe Shane Dorian), but the performance of past surfing world champs and title runner-ups are like fine bottles of wine. And so, there’s no surprise that Brad Gerlach and Martin Potter, coming straight outta the gr80s, will surf the Heritage Heat at this year’s Hurley Pro, Lowers.
The ever-so-chic Mr Gerlach now coaches surfing, most notably for Conner Coffin, and still shreds. Pottz, as you’re aware, has shaved off his wild mane and moved into the world of commentating. During round one of competition, Gerr joined Pottz and Todd Kline at the desk to reminisce with surprisingly little awkwardness about their rivalry and how they nearly threw down on the beach a few times. Fighting is so 80s! It’s a good watch, as will be the heat:
