Ryan Callinan and a ship in the harbour, NSW
Welcome to a late afternoon session in NSW with Ryan Callinan in the final clutches of winter, a season that splits itself equally between groomed offshore perfection and ugly, furious onshores. “There’s really only one option in this area when it’s big and howling onshore,” says photographer Zac Heath, who captured this moment. “It’s a bit of a trek which helps with the crowds, as we enjoyed this session with only fellow Newcastle ripper, Jacko Baker, and one other eager grom. It’d been raining most of the day and I didn’t hold much hope for the session but we found a few ramps in amongst the rain squalls before a huge storm forced me to abandon the session and race back to the car in the pouring rain to save my gear.” Ah, winter. Sometimes she gives, sometimes she don’t.
