Matt Wilkinson, f-side flourish at Itauna Beach, Brazil
Matt Wilkinson is totally way more serious, at least competitively, in 2013. His performance at the opening event on the Gold Coast was inspired (and aggressive!). Rather than bailing elsewhere after the Billabong Pro, Rio wrapped up, Wilko stuck around to defend his title at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime, currently going down at Itauna Beach. But it ain’t been easy. “Conditions are very difficult,” said Wilko on the sand. “The waves are really strong and there’s still the wind and current to deal with. Besides beating your competitors, you’ve also gotta beat the ocean, which makes everything harder. The waves are huge, but fun. It’s a different kind of wave that’s really powerful, so I’m stoked to qualify into the next round and it’d be fantastic to win this event again.” See if the Central Coast goofy can do just that, over here.
