Half-Australian half-Indonesian Lee Wilson generally beams good vibes. So, can you imagine the kid after winning the Rip Curl Padang Cup yesterday? His smile woulda been off the charts.
As the sun set over the 45-minute heat, Lee punched through two tunnels, the first of which was a hands-free effort, earning a 9.50. Backing the near-perfect wave with a 6.50, he managed to slip himself 0.15 points in front of Made ‘Bol’ Adi Putra and Anthony Walsh (the later of whom placed third on count-back), as well as doubling Mustofa Jekson’s combined total. Pretty goddamn impressive, considering Lee was the only dude in the final surfing on his backside.
