By now, you’ve heard that Kelly Slater split with Quiksilver. You might even have read all about it here. And while many insisted it was an April Fools’ joke, it’s emerged that Bob McKnight sent around an internal, company-wide email confirming the move. And in another slice of confirmation, here’s a photograph of Kelly ooping out in Western Australia yesterday, where he’s currently competing in the Margaret River Pro (starting today) – without Quiksilver stickers. Kelly likes to surf on dusk when he’s at an event – the crowd is always smaller – and while it’s not the most advisable thing to do in WA (grey-suited men), after such a big announcement Kelly undoubtedly needed to clear his head before event opening day.
This morning, Kelly wrote us:
“In ’09 I was in contract talks thru March. I re-signed on April 1 that year, this the strange timing yesterday.”
So, there it is.
