With a serious lack of waves around the points of Coolangatta and even D-bah, competitors in the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast (which has today entered it’s third lay-day), have been left with little choice than to leave the immediate area to look for swell-magnet beachbreaks or corners protected from the unrelenting north-easterly wind.
The board that South-African Jordy Smith is riding here is a Channel Islands rookie model that he was given for the contest, along with 22 others. At the point this photo was taken, Jordy was testing boards for the contest, bringing three boards to each session and riding each board for four or five waves, to try and work out what felt right and what felt wrong. Though Jords could undoubtedly get quite a lot outta any board he chooses to ride, this sled was one of the more successful, as you can see here.
