Dane Reynolds lost in Newcastle this morning. The Burton Toyota Pro (part of Surfest), is the contest that sits between the Australian Open of Surfing and the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast. It’s a six-star and it runs at Merewether Beach, a place you’ll recognise from the opening scenes of Ryan Callinan, Matt Hoy, Luke Egan and Mark Richards’ life films (plus the second act from Craig Anderson’s). The waves have been unremarkable, as they often are on Australia’s east coast at this time of year. Which is quite clear in this photograph, taken by Zach Heath in the morning glow. Luckily, the next time you’ll see Dane in a jersey will also feature better waves; those of Snapper, where he’ll surf as wildcard. Ain’t that something? Til then, and despite unideal conditions, Surfest has some decent viewing to offer (the competitiveness of QS events is anything but dull). Watch here.
