Back to school with Jules and Jordy, Reunion Island

Did you know that there’s a Stab x Surfing x Red Bull trip going down in Reunion Island, right now? Jordy Smith and Julian Wilson are there, surfing the righthander that featured in Modern Collective. There’s no other wave quite as air-friendly. The prevailing trade winds blow straight into it at this time of year and shape it into a perfect, consistent ramp. It’s mechanical. Stab‘s kinky for the concept of pushing boundaries. For innovation. Jordy and Julian kinky for it too. So, they’re are at a punchy, windblown righthander, trying like you wouldn’t believe, to raise the level of innovative surfing. A key to success, perhaps, is looking at mistakes, or small victories. The surfing equivalent of this is four grown men huddled around a computer screen, studying the clips they scooped the day before. Pictured here is auteur Kai Neville, who’s documenting the whole party, navigating his machine and excessive memory bank. To the right is Julian’s older bro, Bart, watching his sibling’s magic. Then there’s Jules and Jordy, either side of Kai, watching more intently than the other two, even if they don’t seem to be. “Every morning during coffees the boys gather round the computer to watch the clips from the day before,” says photog Ryan Miller, who’s there to document with stills. “It isn’t even narcissism, it’s like going to school every morning. They watch intently and soak it all in, learning from their mistakes.” More to come, real soon.
