In Brazil, if you go to a soccer stadium, it's almost a cultural thing—everyone is shouting bad words out loud. You see little kids, grandpas, everyone yelling, "F*** you, judge." That’s just how it is at soccer games, and people bring that mentality into surfing. But in surfing, if you’re rooting for someone, that’s fine. If the other guy falls, though, you don’t clap—that’s not cool," says Mateus.
