Your May Comment Of The Month Is…

Should Gabriel Medina become villainous again?

May’s winning comment comes to us — judging by their username — from a nondescript IT office in Irvine next to the 405.

The mysterious Disqus standout, “Steve”, threw out a theory regarding Italo and Gabriel’s relationship with goodness vs. greatness.

Feast your corneas…

It seems, at least qualitatively, that Italo and Gabriel are entering the most zen-like phase of their careers. Even the WSL commentators mentioned in Tahiti that Gabriel is much more sociable and friendly now than he ever was before. And Italo, who is known for being energized and gregarious, looks like he has returned to his happy form after last year’s melancholic lull.

The questions are: Does Italo truly surf his best as the Tour’s hype man? And does Gabriel need a malevolent, Bond-villain swagger to clinch another title? (He’s been noticeably more Terminator-like since Charlie’s return to the fold.)

It remains to be seen. Next stop, El Salv.

Are benevolence and competitive success mutually inclusive for Italo? (Photo by Matt Dunbar/World Surf League)

Steve-O, please send us an email at [email protected] with screenshot proof of your Disqus account — you just won a free year of Stab Premium and you will be entered in the running for the mega-prize for “Comment of the Year” at then end of, you guessed it, the year.

If you remember from this article, Stevie Nicks will now be one of 12 commenters (one for each month) that will be a candidate for COTY. He’ll be sparring against 11 other Dostoevskys for top honors.

Happy typing.

Is this the energy we need from Gabby?
