Surfer Rescues Man And Dog From Drowning In Lake Superior
“I was just going to try and get one more wave in.”
Darby Voeks, a 26-year-old surfer visiting Duluth, Minnesota, rescued a man and a dog from drowning near a shipping canal. Darby woke up at 4 am yesterday for a strike mission to Duluth, Minneapolis. “I love surfing, but I’m not a surfer. I’m not good at it yet.” He told WDIO.
Darby was about to paddle in and head home when a woman in a wheelchair came by in a panic and asked for help. Her dog had jumped into the water near the pier, and her aide went in after him. Both the dog and the aide we’re struggling in the choppy surf, barely able to stay above the surface.
Darby Voeks jumped in the water and rescued the aide and the dog by using the ladder built into the pier. He also had help from two bystanders on the pier.
According to WDIO:
Lt. Robin Roeser from the Duluth Police Department said he is going to nominate Voeks for their Police Partnership Award. “You saved a life. It’s not often we get someone to take a risk like that. It’s a very big deal and we appreciate it. It was very selfless,” Roeser told Voeks.
Voeks may be hesitant to call himself a surfer, but he can’t deny the fact that he is a hero.
