North Shore Surf Contest Application Deadline Until Feb. 26
Apply now, with non-pandemic expectations in mind.
The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) extended the deadline to apply for surf contest permits. Applicants now have up until Feb. 26 to submit paperwork. According to Honolulu Star Adviser:
If approved, the permit for an event will be issued for the same calendar dates over three years, beginning Jan. 1, 2022; and publication of the triennial calendar will also be extended by one month to May 28, 2021, the agency said.
Wouldn’t that be dandy? A Pipe Masters in January or February, both months which boast historically superior surf than the typical early-December window.
That is, of course, if the WSL can get the surf contest permits. As you may recall, the WSL and Honolulu DPR haven’t always agreed on certain topics. Although they have never been denied the permit, the WSL has come close after missing the deadline. Regardless, the application was approved.
Applicants are instructed to base their plans on non-pandemic circumstances, which gives us hope that next year’s Hawaiian leg of the tour will be relatively normal.
