Poll: Which Do You Prefer, ‘Head Noise’ Or ‘Space’

We’re now three-quarters of the way through 2018 and like a calm lake on sunset it’s time to reflect.

No, not on World Title races, the wavepool boom, or Filipe’s sperm count (it’s off the charts) – we want to reflect on two high performance films that came out this year, one by Noa Deane in July, the other by John Florence in September.

As if I need to tell you they are Head Noise and Space, respectively.

Featured in these clips are two of the best surfers in the world, putting on perhaps the paramount performances of their careers, all of which is packaged in a remarkable cinematic fashion.

But beyond what’s stated above, these shorts couldn’t be more different.

While Head Noise is a film-heavy ode to Volcom’s original punk rock aesthetic, Space is pure ethereal bliss, using 1,000 fps cameras and an existronic track to set the mood. Even the means of distribution are divergent, with Head Noise relying on Youtube’s organic viewership to garner hits and Space residing as a Vimeo staff pick. (Space currently has nearly twice as many views as HN).

So while it would be barbaric to criticize either film, one could easily have a favorite between the two, and in that debate the Stab staff is divided.

Embrey continues to fanboy over his avatar-inspo Noa (“I saw him land that ‘oop with my own two eyes!”), so Head Noise is his go-to.

 Morgan is enamored with moody tracks and Rockpile carves, so for him it’s all about Space.

Ashton still believes he’s a little Florida punk at heart, so he sides with Noa.

And me, well, I couldn’t get that chandelier pierce out of head if it was conked by a coconut, making the debate a dead tie.
