Dylan Graves Explores How We Can be Better Allies To LGBTQ+ Surfers
“The only way to grow and learn is to talk about it.”
There are social dilemmas in surfing. Unnecessary, malicious, and vulgar comments made in lineups across the world, all of which have little to do with riding waves. You can choose to avoid these issues, or you can address them head-on, like Dylan Graves in his new series ‘Breaking Waves.’
In episode one, Graves connects with San Francisco-based Queer Surf, an organization dedicated to creating a safe space for marginalized people. It was founded in 2015 by former pro surfer Kyla Langen and her partner Nicci Brisebois. They organize meetups along the coast of California, encouraging diversity in the water and accepting surfers of all kinds.
Dylan also interviews Lee-Ann Curren, the daughter of legendary surf icon Tom Curren. Lee-Ann talks about some of the struggles she faced coming out in the surf industry and how she drew inspiration from the confidence of Keala Kennelly.
