Liam Turner: An Englishman In The Mentawais
And a most distinguished tube pig.
You really can’t blame Cornish surfers for leaving home.
It’s cold, tidal and perhaps most alarmingly, turd-riddled; the result of an archaic Victorian era combined rainwater-and-sewerage-system that routinely spills shit particulate into lineups when overloaded.
And there’s a good chance on any given Tuesday it will be overloaded: it’s England after all.
That is not to say British surfers are shit(e).
On the contrary, we’re discovering that the Tom Lowes (my romantic pick for Stab Surfer of the Year so far), Lukas Skinners (back-to-back ISA World Junior Champ finalist, and International Rip Curl Grom Search winner) and Lucy Campbells (7x National Champ) are world class, and fast closing the gap between their convict colony Down Under.
Add Liam Turner to the list. A Cornwall-born, Hollow Trees Resort-residing goofyfooter who recently inked a deal with Quiksilver Indonesia.
The 30-yo explains in Sorted, “I started surfing in the UK when I was pretty young. From the age of 11 is when I started to get more confident. We spent the summer months in France in a van, then we’d do a couple months of the winter in Indonesia.”
In 2021, Turner went back to Indonesia with his girlfriend and basically never left…
Started teaching Yoga, working at surf camps, and now has begun to build a lot of his own next to the Hollow Trees resort, right out the front of the premiere reef pass.

Really solid surfing in here… the backside downcarves are exquisite…
Also: not sure who chose the music here but well done.
