5 Things To Make You Less Depressed You Don’t Surf Like Mikey February

Beauty makes some men afraid.

There’s no excuse too feeble to discuss Michael February’s fresh opus Nü Rythmo.

In this instance the inclusion of the ‘Happy’ in this list, CI’s newest hi-fi model that Mikey could be riding in the section of the film when that gorgeous sandspit turns on, is enough. Now I’m not going to result to hyperbole and claim best evers—the production value in parts leaves a little to be desired, and I find Mikey’s look-backs a little contrived—but the 12-minute short is the most refreshing thing to come from surfing in some time. The concept worked, the waves were incredible (and empty), and there’s moments where the man’s surfing looks truly original. That can’t be overlooked, especially when riding the sort of performance craft (that you Happy?) we’ve seen put into every crevice of a breaking wave imaginable. Now we’ve rained ample praise on Mr February, cheer up and browse through this week’s trawl. A watch that’ll put you in the slot, a tea that might make you feel great, a craft that won’t make you surf like Mike, and more.

‘Hey It’s Low Tide In Puerto Escondido!’

I had a had one of these as a kid and couldn’t comprehend that with a few clicks of a button I could tell Mum what the tide was doing in Hossegor, Uluwatu or Snapper Rocks. Useless information at the time, but in the age of inexpensive air travel, having your timepiece sync up with wherever you are and dial you into the comings and goings of the local spots is invaluable. Easy on the eye too, unlike the ones that tell you how fast (see: slow) you’re going with each wobble down the line.

Surf Art (No Airbrushed Dolphins In Sight)

The words ‘surf’ and ‘art’ in conjunction conjure images of kombis, airbrushed tubes and leaping dolphins, heinously coloured and splattered on random bits of driftwood. Japanese artist Yusuke Hanai paints the odd kombi, but his work’s rich and thought-provoking and perpetuated with inexplicable melancholy. Such is life. If someone, one day, gifts me one of his prints then I’ll cherish it (and them) forever.

Make a sound investment, for a change.

Potent Nostalgia Trunks

Vans have re-entered the surf game proper: unparalleled team of fun boys, real life budgets; it’s like the good (bad) old days of surfing, only with much higher production values. Their trunks are the perfect blend of tech and throwback 90s style too.

The best of times are yet to come.

Inner Peace To Counteract Outer Chaos

Between us we’ve got the book of ailments CBD soothes: arthritis, scoliosis, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, (rumoured) incurable venereal disease. So anything infused with this magical elixir’s fine with us. From the branding to the taste, Kirra tea’s perfection. Serious question: Can I get away with posting a load of the stuff from the States to my Mum’s house in Oz? I’ll put my Stepdad’s name on the package, obviously…

Take a slurp on the good stuff.

The ‘Alright We’ve Officially Run Out Of Names’ Model

Coming up with names for new surfboard models is as hard as band names. The Arctic Monkeys? Ridiculous. But, coolest frontman of all time. Not sure if the Merrick gang were happy when they made it, or whether surfing it’s supposed to make you happy but, still. If you’re after a performance craft that goes in everything, this thing looks the goods. See footage of the CI team hammering for confirmation.

Come on get happy.
