Some you’ve seen, some you (probably) haven’t!
While Pipe holds the title of the world’s deadliest wave, don’t underestimate an Oz cyclone’s ability to inflict harm on board and body.
The concrete bed of sand that lines the superbank doesn’t show a lot of forgiveness. It’s ruler-straight, ultra shallow and often enjoys snapping glass and vertebra like popsicle sticks.
Thankfully this year no major injuries made news headlines. Sure, plenty of limbs were corked and boards rode their final waves, but nobody transitioned to a wheelchair. Although, sadly, someone did die.
“Wedding filmer and occasional surf filmer” (and man behind the clip you’re sitting below), Michael Kelly, decided that for his Oma edit, he’d include a few dramatic mishaps.
It’s easy to feel deflated looking back on a swell event that you weren’t a part of, but let’s be honest with ourselves, most of us would’ve spent most of our time majestically falling from the ceiling like our friends above, rather than doing what Mick Fanning does.
