VICE Covers The Shark Problem In Reunion Island
A message from the MOTHERBOARD.
This 30 minute doco on Reunion Island’s shark problem is supported by Blake Lively’s (oh how she is lovely) new film: The Shallows. Which is oddly fitting and at the same time in bad taste, especially after Elio Canestri’s father’s recount of his son’s philosophy on surfing in the shark infested waters of Reunion. And how he’d like to go if he got attacked: dead, not handicapped. “He got his wish,” the subtitles scroll ominously across the screen. Then, “Presented by The Shallows” superimposes itself out of nowhere. But, we know as well as any online outlet, you’ve got to get your funding somewhere…
This mini-documentary is worth your time. We’ve covered the Reunion Island shark problem extensively along with well, basically any other shark related incident involving a surfboard. But, just to refresh, between 2011 and 2015, the small French territory of Reunion Island suffered 18 attacks, seven of which proved fatal and holds a stifling 13 percent of all the world’s shark attack fatalities. So if you got 30 minutes to spare – you’re currently browsing through this site, so we assume you do – hit the triangle.
