John John Florence Now Drives For Ford

Will the motor industry save surfing?

Last week, 3x World Surfing Champion, 2x Olympian, 1x Pipe Master, 10x CT event winner, 3x ACL tear survivor, part-time sailor, and nautical empire kingpin, John John Florence, took to Instagram to drop some big news: he’s now driving for Ford.

Today marks the debut of the partnership’s first creation: a three-minute snapshot into a day in the life of John and his family, following the release of his recent 18-minute hellstorm (John’s best performance to date?) just days ago.

Hawaiians seem to enjoy their monster trucks. According to John John, living on the North Shore means you’ve got to own one, with all the adventure that unfolds daily. And now, it’s all green, baby. The new Ford model’s fully electric — not only slightly better for the planet, but also, according to Joe Rogan, preloaded with government tracking devices.

John’s the latest in a line of A-list surfers hitching their wagons to car brands: Steph Gilmore (Ford turned Audi), Sally Fitzgibbons (GWM), Laura Enever (Hyundai), and Nikki Van Dijk (Porsche).

For obvious reasons, John’s deal with Ford will stay under tight lips, but if Steph was pocketing $100k to fly the Ford flag back in 2016, you can bet it’s a solid sum — with fresh tires thrown in for kicks.

If surfing’s on the edge of a new golden age, it could well be the motor industry that shoves us into the future.

Drive safe.
