CJ and Damien Hobgood To Settle Their Score At Teahupoo

The Hobgood grudge match is officially on at the Tahiti Pro.

CJ and Damien Hobgood’s dreams have come true. The score will be settled. The WSL will hold a brother-vs-brother, winner-take-all heat this week at the Tahiti Pro.

After much scrutinizing of the forecast — the boys had to make sure the Wall of Skulls was going to provide — waves are on the way for the middle of next week and it is on. Tickets are booked with the brothers flying out on Sunday. It’s going to be a Hobgood time at the End of the Road (if we could steal one of Dave Prodan’s dad jokes).

The official contest forecast is calling for 8- to 12-foot faces at Teahupoo on Wednesday, August 28. We can confirm that CJ’s been watching the swell closely and is fired up.

A couple of weeks ago we reported on the effort to give CJ and Damo a moment to shine during the event. The subject was originally brought to light in their recent film, “And Two If By Sea.”

Given their bravado at the infamous Chopes over the 15-plus years they competed together on tour, it seemed the perfect spot to settle the score. The power of social media did the rest. The tribe rallied around the twins. The idea was embraced and amplified. And now, powers that be at the WSL have gotten fired up on the idea.

The numbers:

Damo retired from the tour in 2013 and CJ stepped away in 2015. Damo’s still chasing big waves, while CJ’s become a working stiff, joining the team at Salty Crew.

CJ has one World Title; Damo, zero.

Each of them have won once at Teahupo’o.

Some other notable stats:

Trash talk between the two has already commenced, with CJ roasting his twin bro on the WSL’s recent Instagram post (below), where he stated:

@damienhobgood looks like they had trouble finding waves of you from Tahiti that’s because I got them all.”

Having the only 10 between the pair and also one of, if not the biggest Chopes wave ever paddled under his belt, CJ does have some ground to stand on. However, Damo’s average heat score at the end of the road is more than half a point higher than his bro’s, which is the only stat that will really matter in their 30-minute clash.

So, who’s got the upperhand at eight-foot Chopes? We’ll leave that with you.
